When Human Beings Contract Foot and Mouth Disease

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, September 22, 2021

For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies.

2 Thessalonians 3:11 (NKJV)

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a dreadful, highly infectious disease that affects domestic animals such as cows, sheep and goats.

If uncontrolled, FMD can spread fast. While it may not kill mature animals, it causes, fever, quivering lips, blisters on the feet and mouth and significant reduction in milk production.

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is the human version of FMD. This mild variant is prevalent among young children. Its symptoms include rashes on the feet and hands plus mouth sores.

In both cases, there is no specific treatment. Sick animals are isolated or killed to stop the infection spreading. In humans, infected people must wash their hands frequently and avoid close contact with infected persons.

According to Apostle Paul, FMD has a spiritual version. “For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. (2 Thessalonians 3:11).

These people were ‘sick in the feet’. Because they were idle, they could not sit still. They became busybodies, talebearers or gossipers.

Paul demanded that this practice should cease. “Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread.” (2 Thessalonians 3:12).

Let us be careful that we do not fall into the same trap. Spiritual FMD is contagious. If allowed to remain among professed Christians, it spreads fast. God wants us to spend more time working for a living instead of bearing gossip from one person to the other.

Heavenly Father, help me to work in quietness and eat my own bread.
