A Parent’s Greatest Joy

Daily Devotional – Sunday, October 2, 2022
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
3 John 1:4 (NKJV)

As a parent, I derive a lot of joy from the smiles on my children’s faces. I love it when they are healthy and jovial. The noises they make while playing are a great source of contentment. When they bring good grades from school, my heart rejoices. I celebrate with them.

I Have No Greater Joy

When I peep into the future, I see them in respectable professions and jobs and it gives me satisfaction beforehand. Will I also be happy when they give me grandchildren? You can be sure I long for those days!

However, according to Apostle John, none of these reasons constitutes the greatest joy a parent can derive from his or her children. John asserts, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” (3 John 1:4).

Source of Joy or Sorrow

I now realize that educating my children in elite schools will amount to nothing if my offspring do not know God. The best grades and enviable professions and jobs make no sense if my children are strangers to divine wisdom.

If they become the best professionals in the world or feature in the Guinness Book of Records yet lead godless lives, my offspring will have wasted their lives. Instead of giving me great joy, they will be a source of sadness.

How to Achieve Utmost Parental Happiness

What will I say when God asks me, “Where is the flock that was given to you, your beautiful sheep?” (Jeremiah 13:20). Because I do not want to become speechless on that day, I will heed Solomon’s counsel, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6).

A Parent’s Greatest Joy

As I delve deeper into John’s words, I hear Jesus say to me, “I have no greater joy than to hear you, my child, walk in truth.” What a thought! My heavenly Father’s greatest joy is for me to live according to His word.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I know Your greatest joy as my parent is to see me walking in the truth. Help me to train my biological and spiritual children to walk in the truth, too, that I might derive joy from their fidelity to You.
