And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
Galatians 4:6 (NKJV)
I love it when my children call me ‘daddy’. This endearing term has more affection and connection than the title, ‘Father”. Because as they grow older they are likely to become more formal when addressing me, I intend to enjoy every ‘daddy’ moment.
Our Father in Heaven
‘Daddy’ melts my heart because it implies my children and I are friends. We are not just linked biologically. Our hearts and minds resonate. We can play and laugh together. There are a few funny secrets between us. Our bond is unbreakable.
In the Bible, we find a similar interplay between the words ‘father’ and ‘daddy’. For example, in the Lord’s Prayer, we begin by identifying God as our Father. He knows our needs, and He will grant our wishes if we ask according to His will.
Our Heavenly Papa
Our heavenly Father protects us from our enemies and other dangers. He also instructs and guides us to ensure we make the right decisions. In addition, like an earthly parent, God rebukes and chastens us when we rebel against Him.
Then there is our heavenly Daddy. This is how Paul introduces Him: “And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”” (Galatians 4:6). ‘Abba’ means ‘Daddy’ or ‘Papa’.
Abba, Father
This title portrays God as a more personal Being. He is the type of Father whose company we enjoy. We can tell Abba Father everything that gladdens or ails our hearts. He allows us to open our hearts to Him as friends.
At the Garden of Gethsemane, when the sin of the world weighed so heavily upon Him, Jesus appealed to his Daddy, saying, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” (Mark 14:36).
Reveling in God, Our Daddy
Learn to view God as your Daddy, not just your father. Run to Him and enjoy His warm embrace of love, kindness, forgiveness, and healing. He wants you to love, trust, and adore Him like a little child’s father. Stop playing adult with God and revert to being Daddy’s favourite child.
Prayer
Almighty Father, thank You because You are my personal, loving, caring, and forgiving Daddy.
