Why Not Every Battle is Yours

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, August 19, 2025
Do not answer a fool according to his folly lest you also be like him.
Proverbs 26:4 (NKJV)

Someone says something reckless, irritating, or just plain foolish, and everything in us wants to fire back. We want them to feel as much pain as they have caused us. That is why today’s key text is significant. Solomon asserts that not every battle is yours, and hitting back may harm your character and reputation.

Don’t Answer a Fool

Not every comment deserves a comeback. Not every argument is worth your energy. Sometimes the wisest thing you can do is walk away, keep your peace, and let God handle the matter. Answering in the heat of the moment usually makes things worse, not better.

Jesus showed us this when He was mocked and falsely accused. Instead of trading insult for insult, He stayed quiet, calm, and focused on His purpose. That silence was not weakness but strength under control.

Why Not Every Battle is Yours

The next time someone tries to drag you into a pointless argument, remember that not every battle is yours. Your peace, your witness, and your focus on God are worth more than winning a quarrel. Your refusal to react in kind will reveal the difference between you and your aggressor.

Mark Twain, American essayist, novelist, and humorist, once said, “Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference.” Are you quick to argue back when you feel disrespected? Where might God be asking you to choose silence instead of reaction?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, give me patience when I am provoked. Teach me to choose peace over pointless arguments and to honor You with my words or with my silence.
