Greatness Reimagined

Daily Devotional – Saturday, October 25, 2025
An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.
Luke 9:46 (NIV)

The disciples had a misunderstanding about what Jesus’ kingdom was all about. Like many Jews of their time, they expected a political Messiah who would overthrow Roman rule and establish an earthly empire. Even after walking closely with Jesus, they still imagined themselves as ministers in a royal court, arguing over who would hold the highest positions.

From Competition to Compassion

One story paints this clearly: the mother of James and John boldly asked Jesus to give her sons seats of honor beside Him in His kingdom. Naturally, the other disciples were upset, and jealousy began to brew among them. You can almost feel Jesus’ disappointment. Despite His teachings on humility and service, His followers were still chasing status and recognition.

Sensing their thoughts, Jesus brought a child before them. He reminded them that greatness in His kingdom looks nothing like worldly power. Those who are humble, trusting, and willing to serve others are the ones God calls great. Children do not compete; they cooperate. They depend, they share, and they love freely, exactly what Jesus wants His followers to do.

Greatness Reimagined

Sadly, the same spirit of competition still lingers in the modern church. We compare ministries and measure success by numbers, possessions, or titles, and sometimes forget that the goal is to serve, not to outshine others. When ambition overshadows humility, unity fades, and love weakens.

Jesus invites us to take His yoke and learn from His gentleness and humility. True greatness is not about being first or most visible but serving others with love. If we want to follow His example, we must echo John the Baptist’s words: He must become greater; I must become less.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, may You increase as I decrease, for only You are truly great.
