From Excuses to Transformation

Daily Devotional – Monday, November 17, 2025
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, ‘Look, Lord. Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.’
Luke 19:8 (NIV)

A small business owner once learned that one of his employees had been secretly taking money from the company. Instead of denying it, the man returned a few days later with humility. He apologized, repaid the stolen amount, and even added extra to make amends. His actions surprised the entire team and proved that something deep had changed within him.

Faith that Shows

This is a picture of genuine transformation. Yet many Christians respond differently when confronted with their own mistakes. They often say things like “God looks at the heart” or “No one is perfect” or “I am saved by grace.” While these statements contain truth, they can become excuses for remaining in sinful habits. The gospel is not only about forgiveness. It is also about being changed from the inside out.

Zacchaeus demonstrates this fact clearly. As a tax collector, he had gained wealth through corrupt practices. When Jesus chose to visit his home, people were shocked. They could not understand why Jesus would associate with someone known for dishonesty, but Jesus saw a heart that was ready for renewal.

From Excuses to Transformation

When Zacchaeus encountered Christ’s love, he did not hide his wrongdoing. He openly admitted his sins and promised to make things right. His willingness to give to the poor and repay those he had cheated showed that the gospel had produced real change in him.

A genuine relationship with Jesus always leads to growth. When He dwells in us, our attitudes, decisions, and behaviors begin to reflect His character. A true follower of Christ will always bear visible fruit.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I surrender to Your transforming power. Produce in me the fruit of the Spirit every day.
