For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition.
1 Corinthians 16:18 (NIV)
A schoolteacher once shared how a struggling student quietly helped her tidy the classroom every evening. He never asked for praise, and most people never noticed his kindness. One day, during assembly, the teacher publicly thanked him. The shy boy smiled widely, and that simple recognition motivated him to keep helping others.
Give Flowers to the Living
This reminds us how powerful appreciation can be. Sadly, many people who do good are overlooked. King Solomon once told a story about a poor but wise man who saved an entire town, yet no one thought to thank him. His words remind us to value those who contribute to our lives and to the work of God.
The apostle Paul understood this well. In his letter to the Corinthians, he expressed gratitude for Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus. They were not famous leaders or great teachers, yet they strengthened Paul in ways others had not. He urged the church to acknowledge people like them because their support refreshed his spirit.
Celebrating the Unsung Heroes
Paul set this example again in Romans chapter 16, where he mentioned more than two dozen believers by name. Imagine how those individuals felt when the letter was read aloud. People like Persis, Rufus, Julia, Urbanus, and Tryphosa must have felt seen, valued, and encouraged to continue serving.
We all have people who have stood with us in hard and joyful seasons. Think about family, friends, coworkers, mentors, neighbours, or church members who have supported you. Let them know you appreciate them. A simple message, call, or personal visit can uplift a heart. When possible, recognize them publicly or bless them with a small gift.
Acknowledging others encourages them and strengthens the work of God.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to appreciate the people who have supported me in every season of life.
