From Waiting to Walking

Daily Devotional – Thursday, January 15, 2026
When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
John 5:6 (NIV)

A man sits at a bus stop every day, rain or shine, watching people arrive, board, and move on with their lives. Year after year, he stays seated, telling himself tomorrow might be different. Over time, waiting becomes normal, and hope learns to whisper instead of shout.

The Day Jesus Interrupted the Waiting

That was the reality for the man Jesus met. He had lived with his condition for decades, long enough for disappointment to feel familiar. People who once knew him had moved on. Opportunities passed him by. Each day looked like the one before, and healing felt reserved for others with help, strength, or timing.

Even at the pool where healing sometimes happened, he remained alone. He watched others step ahead while he stayed behind, trapped by weakness and delay. When Jesus asked if he wanted to be well, the question sounded strange. Of course he did. Yet years of unmet expectations trained him to explain why nothing ever worked.

From Waiting to Walking

Jesus did not debate his excuses. He spoke with authority and compassion, telling him to stand, pick up his mat, and walk. Obedience mattered more than understanding. The man moved in faith, and strength rushed back into limbs that had known only weakness for years.

Jesus still walks into ordinary places today, meeting people worn down by waiting, sin, or pain. He asks the same question and offers the same grace. Your past does not disqualify you. Your delay does not cancel His power. When He speaks, respond. Stand up, trust Him, and step forward today.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I am patiently waiting for my turn. I want to shift from waiting to walking.
