Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.
James 5:16 (NKJV)
A small group of people crossed a narrow wooden bridge one at a time on a hiking trail because the planks creaked when they stepped on them. One hiker slipped and yelled halfway across. His colleagues quickly turned back and helped him across the bridge.
Opening the Door to Restoration
James says that people who believe in God should tell each other about their wrongdoings and pray for each other so that healing can happen. Sin grows in the dark, where shame makes us want to hide. However, God has grouped us with other believers so that we can support and share our challenges.
Sometimes we fear harsh judgement if we confess our sins to others. The gospel presents an alternative narrative. When Christians humbly confess, they enter the light where prayer starts to work. God often heals not just the soul, but also broken friendships and tired minds.
Where Healing Quietly Begins
Confession may entail picking trustworthy believers who will pray for us and help us find our way back to Christ. Their prayers serve as a reminder that forgiveness is genuine and that transformation is possible. When we pray together, our struggles become places where God’s healing presence quietly brings back courage, faith, humility, patience, hope, and deeper unity.
If you have a secret burden on your heart today, think about doing what our key text says and being brave. Talk honestly with a believer you trust and ask them to pray with you and for you. When people stop keeping things to themselves and pray together, healing often begins. Do that today and see grace start to work.
Prayer
Father in heaven, help me be humble enough to admit my mistakes and brave enough to ask for prayer so that Your healing can work in my life.
