Show proper respect to everyone…
1 Peter 2:17 (NIV)
The bus, packed to capacity, suddenly erupted in a minor dispute over the fare. The driver snaps, the passenger responds, and the entire vibe alters. You can feel the tension in the air. Nobody is truly trying to understand anyone else. It’s less about the issue and more about who can win the moment.
More Than Just Words
Peter’s words pierce directly into such scenarios. “Show proper respect to everyone” is not advice for easy situations. It’s a call that comes right in the midst of frustration, conflict, and difficulty. It serves as a reminder that every individual we meet has value given to them by God, regardless of how they behave.
The challenge is that our regard is often based on how others behave. When someone is kind, it is easy to respect them. When someone is nasty or dismissive, something in us resists. Today’s key text demands a consistent level of respect that does not alter depending on mood, treatment, or personal preference.
The Weight of a Simple Command
It also addresses how we manage truth. You can be right while still being cruel. You may correct someone while also taking away their dignity in the process. Respect influences not only what we say but also how we express ourselves. It stimulates critical thinking and reminds us that individuals are more important than winning fights.
Today, pause before responding. If someone irritates you, respond calmly rather than harshly. Take a moment to examine the person you are about to dismiss. This is where the key text comes to life: in the small, everyday decisions that gently reflect Christ.
Prayer
Almighty God, teach me how to respect everyone and to be kind to them the same way You are king to me.
