A Friendship That Demands Trust

Daily Devotional – Friday, April 3, 2026
And he was called the friend of God.
James 2:23 (NKJV)

It is late, and your phone rings. You check the name and pause. You know that if you answer, it will cost you time, energy, and maybe even comfort. Part of you wants to ignore it. Still, you pick up anyway. Not because it is convenient, but because the relationship matters to you.

The Weight of Being Called a Friend

That scenario gives a glimpse of what James is pointing to when he says Abraham was called God’s friend. Back in Genesis 15:6, Abraham believed God, and that faith was counted as righteousness. His trust was not just something he felt inwardly. It shaped the way he responded to God when he was called to act.

Years later, in Genesis 22, that trust was stretched. God asked Abraham to offer Isaac, and Abraham obeyed. He didn’t have all the answers, and it certainly wasn’t easy. Yet he trusted God enough to move forward. This is what James means when he says the Scripture was fulfilled. His faith became visible through what he did.

A Friendship That Demands Trust

This is where it gets personal. A genuine friendship with God goes beyond just feeling close to Him. It shows itself in how we respond to His calls, especially when those responses require us to make sacrifices. The story of Abraham demonstrates that true faith is always visible. It steps forward, even when the path is unclear.

So what is God asking of you right now? Maybe it’s something small, maybe it feels heavy. Either way, do not ignore it. Lean in, trust Him, and take the next step. That is how your faith grows, and that is how a life begins to look like a friend of God.

Prayer
Lord, help me to trust You in the moments that cost me and to respond when You call.
