When We Put Others First

Daily Devotional – Friday, April 24, 2026
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
Philippians 2:3 (NKJV)

One student did most of the work on a group project without saying anything. When it was time to present, a more confident student led and got most of the praise. The first student had the opportunity to speak up and clarify the situation, but he chose not to. He cared more about the group’s success than getting credit.

In Lowliness of Mind

Paul’s words make us question how we usually perceive ourselves. It is easy to want credit, be noticed, and feel important. Selfish ambition makes us put ourselves first, and pride makes us think we deserve more than others. Being humble, however, changes the focus. We choose to value others, not because we are less important, but because we are willing to put love into action.

In everyday life, such humility can feel uncomfortable. You may find yourself wanting to be acknowledged for your efforts or frustrated when others are celebrated instead of you. These moments reveal how quickly pride can rise.

When We Put Others First

Humility, however, tells you to do things differently. It reminds you that your worth is not based on how much praise you get but on how you feel about yourself. Your humility reflects in your listening, serving, and responding when others overlook you. People may overlook these quiet choices, but they hold significant importance.

Choose today to put others before yourself in simple, practical ways. Be open to stepping back, listening, and assisting without seeking recognition. God sees what others may not and rewards those who are humble.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, teach me to walk in humility and to value others above myself in all I do.
