Can Pleasure Really Satisfy the Soul?

Daily Devotional – Friday, May 8, 2026
I said in my heart, “Come now, I will test you with mirth; therefore, enjoy pleasure,” but surely, this also was vanity.
Ecclesiastes 2:1 (NKJV)

After saving for a long time, Ken’s family finally went on a beach vacation. They laughed and ate and took beautiful pictures together and loved every minute. Life seemed better and lighter for a few days. However, as soon as they returned home, they realised their old challenges had not gone on vacation with them.

Why Distractions Cannot Replace God

Solomon speaks from personal experience in today’s key text. The king decided to see if pleasure and enjoyment could truly satisfy him. He had more wealth, entertainment and comfort than most people could imagine. Eventually, though, he realised that happiness alone does not provide lasting meaning to life. While Solomon did not condemn enjoying life, he emphasised that life becomes empty when we are separated from God.

Our lives are not different. A lot of the time, people use entertainment as a way to deal with stress, sadness, or loneliness. Some people keep themselves busy all the time because they feel uncomfortable in silence. Others think that the next purchase, event or exciting experience will make them happy. All these things may give us transient happiness, but they cannot satisfy the deeper needs of the soul.

Can Pleasure Really Satisfy the Soul?

God never meant our lives to be built on passing pleasures. He gives good things to enjoy, but only He satisfies our hearts. If you know Him, trust Him and walk with Him every day, you will find real peace. We can find greater value in even the smallest things when our hearts are close to the One who gave them to us out of love.

When life is hard, be honest with yourself concerning where you normally put your trust. It is convenient to hide behind other things while feeling spiritually empty inside. Today, bring those secret problems to the Lord. In your prayers, ask Him to fill your heart with lasting happiness, even when the fun and laughter are gone.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, fill my life that I may find true happiness and contentment in You, not in short-term rewards.
