Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!
Psalms 150:6 (NKJV)
Two days ago, a friend told me about a woman who died suddenly. That morning, she had prepared her young son for school and gone on with an ordinary day. About two hours later, the boy was sent home for a book he had forgotten. He found his mother in bed and unresponsive and alerted the neighbours. They called his father, and they rushed her to hospital. The doctor said she had already died. I could not stop thinking about how quickly that morning had changed.
Are You Taking This for Granted?
What struck me most was how ordinary that morning had been. She had woken up, prepared her child, and expected the day to continue. I thought about my own mornings and how easily I move through them without noticing the gift of being alive. I wake up, make plans, deal with responsibilities, and sometimes complain about things that will soon be forgotten. Yet I have another day in front of me. That thought made me stop and thank God.
Psalm 150:6 says, “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!” The psalm closes with a broad call to praise, extending beyond a particular group to every living creature. The Hebrew expression translated “has breath” refers to breath or life. The verse, therefore, calls those who are alive to praise the LORD. Being alive gives us another opportunity to respond to God with praise and to recognise the gift of life we often overlook.
What Are You Taking for Granted Today?
The next time you wake up and your mind immediately runs through everything you need to do, pause for a moment. You may be thinking about a bill, a difficult day at work, or something happening in your family. Those concerns are real, yet there is something worth noticing before you begin listing them. You opened your eyes. You are breathing. You have another day to speak to the people you love, do your work, pray, and praise God.
Before you complain about what today has brought, take a moment to thank God that you are here to face it. We do not know what each day will bring, and that should make today’s gift more precious, not more frightening. You have breath in you right now. Use it to praise God. You can thank Him for your life, for another morning, and for the opportunity to live this day with gratitude instead of taking it for granted.
Prayer
My Creator, I have so much that can distract me from noticing the gift of being alive. Always remind me to live with gratitude and praise instead of taking Your gifts for granted.
