Let us know; let us pursue the knowledge of the LORD. His going forth is established as the morning. He will come to us like the rain, like the latter and former rain to the earth.
Hosea 6:3 (NKJV)
Few things are more frustrating than waiting for rain when the land is dry. Farmers can plough their fields, plant their seeds, and do everything they can, but they cannot make the clouds open. They wait. They watch the sky. They hope. Then, one day, the rain finally comes. The ground softens, the crops revive, and the apparently dead begin to grow again. In normal rains, nobody pays much heed to it; it is in a drought that rain becomes precious.
What to Do During a Spiritual Drought
Hosea uses that picture to describe our relationship with God. He invites us to “know” the Lord and to “pursue” that knowledge. The wording is important. Knowing God is not a one-time event. It is a lifelong pursuit. Just like a friendship, the more time you spend together, the deeper it becomes. Our relationship with God is the same. As we walk with Him day after day, there is always more to learn of His character, His faithfulness, His wisdom, and His love.
What strikes one about this verse is the confidence of God’s answer. Hosea does not say God might appear. He says His coming is as sure as the sunrise. Every evening darkness settles in, yet nobody lies awake wondering whether the sun will rise the next morning. We expect it because it has never failed. Hosea wants us to have that same confidence in God. There are times in life when God seems silent, when our prayers seem unanswered, and when we can’t see clearly what He is doing. His silence, nevertheless, is not abandonment. He is still working even when we cannot trace His hand.
How to Seek God When He Feels Distant
The prophet then likens God’s coming to the rains of spring that water the earth. That image had real meaning for Hosea’s readers. Their crops depended on those rains. They are essential for growth and harvest. Likewise, our souls need the refreshing presence of God. Spiritually dry, we can be left feeling disappointed, distracted, busy, and worn down by daily life. When we draw near to Him, He brings fresh strength, fresh perspective, and fresh hope.
Perhaps you have been searching for God to guide, encourage, and make you more aware of His presence. Continue to seek Him. Continue opening His Word. Continue praying, even if your prayers feel ordinary. Continue trusting Him when the answers seem slow in coming. The God Hosea talks about is not aloof or indifferent. He loves to reveal Himself to those who seek Him. Just as surely as the sun rises at its appointed time and the rains finally come to thirsty earth, God will meet you as you reach toward Him.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your faithfulness. Help me to seek You even when I can’t see what You are doing. Renew my heart, increase my faith and draw me closer to You each day.
