Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification.

A bricklayer can lay bricks all day. Make sure they are laid right. Check all the measurements. Make sure every wall is stable enough to last. When the day ends, the building may not look dramatically different, yet it is taller, stronger, and closer to completion than it was that morning. Demolishing that same wall, however, would take only a few minutes with the right tools. Building calls for patience, skill, and purpose. Tearing down is always easier. The same thing is true in our relationships. Every conversation, every response, and every action either strengthens someone’s life or quietly chips away at it.
One Brick at a Time
Paul paints a similar picture in our key text. The believers in Rome were divided on matters of personal conviction and some were tempted to insist on their personal freedoms. Instead, Paul said, they needed to look beyond themselves to what would actually help others. They were not there to win arguments or to be right but for the edification of fellow believers. That is the core of Paul’s message. As a builder carefully sets one brick after another, God calls us to build up the faith of others through our words, attitudes, and actions, one opportunity at a time.
A careless comment can discourage someone who is already carrying a heavy burden. A calm answer can forestall a tense situation from escalating. A true word of encouragement can give a weary believer the strength to keep trusting God. We often measure spiritual maturity by how much we know or how many freedoms we enjoy. Paul measures it differently. Mature believers use their freedom willingly to help others grow in Christ and not just to look after their own interests.
What Are You Building?
Jesus is the perfect example of this kind of life. Paul immediately points to Him, reminding his readers that Christ did not live to please Himself. The Lord never lived to protect His comfort or demand His rights. He willingly set them aside for our eternal good. Every act of compassion, every word of truth, and ultimately His sacrifice on the cross was intended to restore broken lives. If Christ devoted Himself to building us up, then those who follow Him should become known as people who build others rather than tear them down.
Today, pause before you speak or react and ask yourself one simple question: Will this leave this person stronger in their walk with God? That question can change the way you handle disagreements, respond to criticism, or encourage someone who is struggling. Strong buildings do not appear overnight. They are built by a builder, brick by brick, faithful work. Similarly, God often sustains people through our means of simple acts of kindness, patience, truth and love.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to build up others in my words, attitudes and actions, so that my life strengthens their faith and brings glory to You.
