And you shall be holy, for I, the LORD your God, am holy.
Leviticus 19:2 (NKJV)
We hear the word “holy” a lot, especially in church. However, ask us to define holiness, and many of us would struggle to put it into words. We might think of someone who lives a well-disciplined religious life, avoids certain things, and seems especially devoted to God. The Bible provides us a fuller picture. To be holy is to be set apart for God and to have his character impact how we live. So, when God tells Israel, “You shall be holy,” He is calling them to live differently because they are His.
The Test of Holiness Happens Outside Church
What makes this command interesting is what God talks about next. Leviticus 19 does not give Israel a list of impressive religious activities. Instead, God brings holiness into everyday life. Honour your parents. Care about the poor. Be honest in your dealings. Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not take advantage of people. Do not hold hatred in your heart. Love your neighbour as you love yourself. In other words, holiness is not just about what happens during worship. It shows up in how people treat one another, handle their responsibilities, and make decisions when ordinary life gets messy.
That is where this command becomes personal for us. We can look religious and still be impatient at home, dishonest in business, harsh with people, or full of resentment toward someone who hurt us. We can know the right words in church and still struggle to live them out on Monday morning. God cares about that Wednesday morning life. He cares about how we speak when irritated, what we do when no one is watching, and how we treat those who cannot do anything for us. Holiness is not about putting on a religious appearance. It is about letting God change who we are.
The Kind of Holiness God Actually Wants
There is another part of this verse that we should not miss. God does not say, “Be holy because everyone around you is holy.” He says, “I, the LORD your God, am holy.” Our standard is God Himself. That can feel overwhelming because none of us can honestly say that our lives reflect His holiness perfectly. Yet God is not asking us to pretend that we have arrived. He is inviting us to walk with Him and let Him change us. As we get closer to Him, we start to see things in ourselves that need to change, and we are more willing to let them go.
Take a minute today and look past your church attendance, Bible reading, or public image. Where does your everyday life need to reflect God more clearly? Maybe it is the way you speak to someone at home, handle money, respond to criticism, or deal with resentment. Start there. Bring that area honestly before God and ask Him to work in you. Holiness is not about pretending to be perfect. It is about belonging to a holy God and allowing that relationship to affect the way you live. Let His character show up in the ordinary parts of your life and become visible in your daily life.
Prayer
Almighty God, You are holy, and I want my life to show Your character. Show me the areas that need to change and help me to surrender them all to You.
