For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.

King Asa had known what it was like to depend on God. Earlier in his reign, a vast Ethiopian army came against Judah, and Asa turned to the LORD for help. God answered him and gave Judah victory. Years later, another threat arose. Baasha, king of Israel, began fortifying Ramah, and Asa now faced another serious problem. This time, he did something different. He took silver and gold from the temple and palace and sent them to Ben-Hadad, king of Syria, asking for his help. The Syrian king agreed, and Baasha withdrew. The immediate problem had disappeared.
The Moment Asa Stopped Trusting God
God, however, saw something Asa’s successful plan could not show. Hanani the seer came to him with a rebuke: Asa had relied on the king of Syria instead of relying on the LORD. Hanani reminded him of the earlier victory, when God had delivered Judah from a much greater army. Asa had seen God’s power before. Yet when another crisis came, his response was different. He reached for a human solution instead of turning again to God. The problem was not that Asa made a plan. It was that, when trouble came, his confidence had shifted to something he could arrange and control.
That is what makes Hanani’s words in today’s key text profound. God’s eyes move throughout the whole earth, seeing what is happening and looking for hearts that are fully His. He wanted to show His strength on Asa’s behalf. God was not impressed simply because Asa’s plan had worked. He was looking deeper, at the heart behind the decision. Asa’s circumstances had changed, but so had the place where he was putting his confidence. The verse reminds us that God sees more than the outcome of our decisions. He sees what we are trusting while we make them.
The Danger of Solving a Problem Without God
We can find ourselves in Asa’s position more easily than we might admit. Something goes wrong, and before long we are making calls, working through every possibility, asking people for help, and trying to find a way out. There is nothing wrong with taking action or seeking wise advice. Sometimes, though, while we are busy solving the problem, we have stopped looking to God. We may still pray, yet inside we have already decided that everything depends on us. God sees that difference. He knows whether our efforts are flowing from trust in Him or from the fear that we are on our own.
The next time you face a difficult situation, pause before you rush to fix it. Remember what God has already done for you. Think about the times when you had no clear answer and He made a way. Then do what needs to be done, but do it with your confidence still resting in Him. You do not have to choose between responsible action and trusting God. You can work, plan, seek counsel, and make decisions while keeping your heart fully turned toward Him. God sees that heart. And when He finds one that is truly His, He is able to show Himself strong.
Prayer
Almighty God, keep my heart fully turned toward You. When trouble comes, help me remember Your faithfulness and trust You while I do what wisdom requires. Show Yourself strong in my life as I learn to depend on You.
