Daily Devotional – Friday, September 4, 2026
Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, ‘Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.’
Genesis 28:16 (NKJV)
The ‘room’ was quiet, the ground was hard, and a stone rested beneath Jacob’s head. He was far from home, sleeping in an unfamiliar place because night had caught up with him on the journey. Nothing about that night looked remarkable. Then Jacob dreamed. He saw a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, with angels going up and down on it, and he heard the LORD speak. When he opened his eyes, he was still in the same place. The ground was still hard. The stone was still there, but Jacob had learnt something he had not known before.
What Are You Not Seeing?
God had spoken to Jacob, reminding him of His promises to Abraham and Isaac. He promised Jacob descendants, the land, and His presence as he continued his journey. So when Jacob said, “Surely the LORD is in this place,” he was responding to what God had just shown him. The LORD had made Himself known to Jacob in that place, and Jacob was beginning to grasp the significance of what had happened. The place looked ordinary, but Jacob now understood that God was not far from him.
There is something deeply human about what happened that night. Jacob was moving into a future he could not see. He had left the familiar behind, and there was no way for him to know exactly what waited ahead. Then God spoke before Jacob had answers to all his questions. The Lord gave him a promise and assured him of His presence. We can understand that. There are times when we want God to explain everything before we take another step, but He gives us something simpler: His Word, His character, and enough light to take the next step.
Why Does This Moment Matter?
Jacob’s response also reminds us that God’s presence is not something we create by trying to feel spiritual. God revealed Himself, and Jacob responded. Jacob received a specific revelation from the LORD. Similarly, we have His written Word, which tells us who He is and what He has promised. We can return to what God has already said and let that steady us when everything around us feels uncertain.
Jacob woke up knowing that his journey was not over. He still had places to go and things he could not predict. But he no longer looked at his journey in quite the same way. He knew that God had spoken to him and would be with him. Likewise, you may not understand where this season is leading. You may wish you had more answers. Perhaps you will have to keep walking without them. Hold on to what God has already told you. His faithfulness does not depend on how clearly you can see the road. You can take the next step with confidence because He knows where the road leads.
Prayer
Almighty God, when I cannot see what is ahead, help me remember what You have already said. When my circumstances confuse me, help me to trust You and take the next step even when I don’t have all the answers.
