When Hope Hangs by a Thread

Daily Devotional – Saturday, October 10, 2026
I would have lost heart unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
Psalm 27:13 (NKJV)

James was an optimist, and this trait was especially useful when he was laid off from his job. He quickly updated his resume and sent it to as many prospective employers as possible. His friends also kept their ears on the ground for any relevant opening. However, weeks turned into months, and the calls never came. The bills kept piling up, and he started wondering how he would manage. On some mornings, he struggled to get out of bed and start looking again. He needed a reason to keep going.

What If Good Things Are Still Ahead?

Have you ever been in a situation where you wondered how much longer you could keep trying? David knew what it was like to live under pressure. He had genuine reasons to fear because his enemies kept threatening him. Yet he held on to the belief that he would see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living. While he felt like giving up, he held on to the hope that only God could provide.

There are days when we pray, do our best, and still see very little change. We start to question whether our efforts will ever lead to results or whether God will answer our prayers. David’s statement, therefore, is significant. He found a reason to keep going because he had confidence in God’s goodness. He held on to his belief that he would experience God’s goodness during his lifetime.

When Hope Hangs by a Thread

Perhaps you know someone who has been seeking employment for months, struggling to keep a business afloat, or praying about a family problem that refuses to go away. You may be facing something similar yourself. When difficulties drag on, it becomes easy to lose hope. If that happens, share your true feelings with God. Ask for strength, seek advice from someone you trust, and keep taking the practical steps available to you. Sometimes, getting through today is enough for now.

Is there something you have been praying about for so long that you are beginning to lose heart? You do not have to hide your disappointment from God. Tell Him what is troubling you, and ask Him to help you keep going. Think about the next step you can take today, even if it seems small. You may not know how things will work out, but you can keep trusting in God’s goodness as you face whatever lies ahead.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, despite the formidable challenges I often face, I am confident that I will see Your goodness in this life.
