My Greatest Desire

Daily Devotional – Monday, July 31, 2023
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.
Psalms 19:14 (NKJV)

As the excitement of youthfulness fades and I begin to catch a glimpse of old age, I realize that the simpler my life, the more enjoyable it is. Spiritually, too, I have learned to reduce my relationship with God to the basics. My greatest desire, therefore, is to please God.

Craving for Attention

In life, there are many centres of attention. My wife, children, church, extended family, job, friends, society and so on, demand a share of me. The open or covert expectation of all these entities is that I will satisfy them. Each of them often expects me to offer undivided focus and to sacrifice my personal interests to please them.

I have realized, however, that even with my best efforts, I cannot fully satisfy any of them. Many times, I fall short and feel dissatisfied with myself even as I attempt to appease the people and entities that demand my consideration. With time, though, I have come to learn that there is one thing I can do to ensure I do not struggle to please human beings.

My Utmost Longing

The psalmist encapsulates my philosophy of life when he pleads with God, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.” (Psalms 19:14). His greatest desire is for sanctification of thought and speech as this will align him with God and keep him away from sin.

In essence, David does not struggle to please human beings first. He knows that when the Holy Spirit dwells in him, his (David’s) thoughts and words will please God and minister grace and encouragement to human beings. The psalmist wants to please God first. People and issues that demand his attention come second and are only important in so far as they do not contradict God’s will.

My Greatest Desire

That is why one of my incessant prayer items is that I will always be in God’s good books. I want nothing to separate me from Him. Thankfully, I do not have to struggle to attain this ideal because God the Holy Spirit offers to live in me and purify my thoughts and words.

When the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart are acceptable in God’s sight, I know that He My Strength and my Redeemer will walk with me and supply my all my need according to His riches in Christ desire. Therefore, my greatest desire is to please God in all the faculties of my life. What is your utmost longing?

Prayer
Dear God, let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my Strength and my Redeemer.
