It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)
Have you ever wronged somebody, who later forgave you, but continued to remind you of the forgiven sin? It feels like you were not forgiven in the first place. In contrast, our God forgives, forgets and is ready to pardon the repentant person again, any time.
In Psalm 130:3, we read, “If you, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? For a moment, imagine all your sins spelt out in a book. Would you dare read it? Would you be comfortable if others were allowed to read your evils?
Indeed “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed…” (Lamentations 3:22-NIV). Isaiah reminds us that if God withdrew His mercy, we would not be better than the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, which were destroyed with fire because of sin (Isaiah 1:9).
Thank God, who is full of “forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve” him. (Psalm 103:4). The unending mercies of God towards sinners can only be repaid through worshipping and serving the Almighty.
God forgives us “because his compassions fail not.” We can face every day knowing that God’s mercies are “new every morning. Realizing that we do not need to carry yesterday’s guilt, we can exclaim joyfully, “great is thy faithfulness!”
While God does not want you to sin, He says that if you do, Christ, your lawyer, will plead on your behalf (1 John 2:1). Take a moment today to reflect on and thank God for his daily instalment of mercy on you.
