And say to Archippus, “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.”
Colossians 4:17 NIV
A construction site can look impressive even when it is unfinished. The foundation is firm, the walls are rising, and the design promises something beautiful. Yet if the builder walks away before the work is done, the structure never serves its purpose. It becomes a reminder of what could have been, not what was intended.
Complete the Ministry
This is the concern behind Paul’s message to Archippus. He had received a ministry from the Lord, meaning God Himself entrusted him with a specific responsibility. The calling was genuine and the need was real, yet Paul saw reason to urge him to pay close attention and bring that work to completion. The reminder suggests that Archippus may have grown weary, distracted, or less committed than before.
Paul’s instruction reveals important truths about serving God. Ministry is not something we assign to ourselves. It is received from the Lord. God also expects faithfulness, not just enthusiasm at the beginning. When a calling is neglected, it does not only affect the individual. The church and the people who depend on that ministry are impacted as well.
A Divine Reminder to Focus
This same pattern often appears in our lives. God has given each of us roles to play in His church and in the world. Over time, pressure, fear, fatigue, or the desire for comfort can quietly pull us away from what God asked us to do. When we step back, others miss the blessing God intended to bring through our obedience.
What ministry have you received from the Lord? God is calling you to remain alert, focused, and faithful. As His steward, commit to finishing well. When you do, the church is strengthened and the world is enriched through your obedience.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, renew my focus and give me grace to complete the work You have entrusted to me.
