A Unique Definition of Sin

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, July 29, 2025
Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
James 4:17 (NKJV)

Today’s key text hits deep. It gives us a unique definition of sin. It is not talking about the obvious sins, like lying, stealing, or hurting people. Rather, it points out the moments when we know deep down what the right thing is, but we just don’t do it.

It is Sin

Maybe God puts it on your heart to reach out to someone who is struggling. Perhaps you feel nudged to forgive, to apologize, to give, or to serve, but you hesitate. That delay, according to James, is not just a missed opportunity but a sin.

Obeying God is not just about avoiding bad behavior. It also involves actively choosing good. While it is commendable not to hurt anyone, it is equally important to ask, “Did I help anyone today? Is there something I failed?

A Unique Definition of Sin

The truth is, obedience does not always come naturally. It can be inconvenient, awkward, or even risky, but that is where faith comes in. Trusting God means doing the right thing, even when it is hard or uncomfortable.

Thankfully, God gives us grace and power to grow. Every time we respond to His prompting, we grow a little stronger. We become a little more courageous, a little more like Jesus. The opposite is true. Sins of omission are sins like any other.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I know there have been times when I ignored Your voice. Give me courage to act when You call. Don’t let fear or laziness keep me from doing good. Help me be someone who shows up.
