But above all these things, put on love, which is the bond of perfection.
Colossians 3:14 (NKJV)
The Christian life is full of numerous qualities, such as patience, gentleness, humility, kindness, and compassion. Paul, in the third chapter of his letter to the church in Colossae, mentions these virtues. However, he climaxes his exhortation with the call, “Above all these things, put on love.”
The Bond of Perfection
Love is like a glue. It is the thread that ties all the virtues together to create something complete and lovely. Our deeds can become meaningless if we lack love. Everything else has depth, significance, and vitality because of love.
According to Paul, love can be “put on” like a garment. It’s an everyday decision. God expects us to dress ourselves in love, just as we dress ourselves every morning. That way, we can decide to forgive those who mistreat us, be kind even when it is inconvenient, and be patient when pushed to the limits.
Above all Things
Observe the outcome: “the bond of perfection.” Here, the Greek term implies harmony, wholeness, and tranquility. Love creates harmony in communities, churches, and families in addition to making us feel good. That is how we create a little heaven on earth.
How can you present yourself as a loving person? Are there situations where you have not demonstrated love towards others, even when they are in the wrong? From today onwards, consider love a garment you wear to every interaction, every conversation, and every choice you make during the day. Above all things, let people notice that you are loving.
Prayer
Loving Father, above all things, clothe me with Your love and let me extend it to others, including those who are not good towards me.
