Act Like Men!

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, April 28, 2021

Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.

1 Corinthians 16:13 (ESV)

Hugh Latimer was a Protestant Reformer who lived in England in the 16th Century. He was asked to speak before King Henry VIII. God impressed on Latimer to preach a message that would be uncomfortable to the King.

Would he deliver the sermon and risk his life? He agonized.

Another voice came to Latimer? Was God not immensely powerful than King Henry? “Latimer! Latimer! Be faithful to your Master, and declare all of God’s Word.” God’s voice said.

Latimer decided to courageously deliver God’s message exactly as he had received it. For his action, he was martyred. [1]

Similarly, for defending their faith, the Corinthian Christians, risked death from the state. They also faced rejection from their society and families because of going against prevailing culture.

Paul urged them, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. (1 Corinthians 16:13). Like soldiers, they were to be on constant guard, lest Satan should attack them unawares and lead them away from Christ.

There were also to “act like men” and not spiritual babies. The Christian faith demanded spiritual stamina and maturity.

We, too, are called to be courageous. If there were no threats and dangers from the enemy, courage would not be necessary. Courage is the will to act, especially when circumstances dictate that we turn away in fear.

When you are principled in your work and commitment to doing the right thing, expect opposition. Don’t give up! One day, you will receive the crown of life. However, where there is no battle, what is the crown for?

Father, please give me courage and strength to defend my faith in you.
