Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us—that we should be called children of God!
1 John 3:1 (NKJV)
He was a gifted high school student who performed before the president at a gala event. The crowd was in stitches, and so was the head of state. Days later, the president announced he had adopted the young man and would cater for his education to the highest level.
God’s Adoptive Children
Who would have expected that the son of a single mother would find himself among royalty? He now enjoyed privileges and opportunities that he would never have imagined. Last time I heard of him, he was supposed to travel abroad for further studies, courtesy of his adoptive father, the president.
I remember this story when I read 1 John 3:1, which states, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1). Like the president who adopted the youth, God demonstrated indescribable love when He adopted us as His children.
Accepted Into Royalty
However, unlike the lad who performed for and impressed the president, we did nothing to deserve adoption by God. That is why John marvels at how vile sinners like us could even be called children of God. God had pity on us and sent His Son to die for us despite our sinfulness.
Indeed, John asserts that when Jesus returns, we shall be like him (in character and body type) and shall see Him face-to-face (verse 2). In essence, our adoption as God’s children will be confirmed and celebrated by Jesus Himself. What amazing kindness for the fallible children of Adam!
Adopted By the President of the Universe
Is there any obligation for those God has adopted? John adds, “And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” (1 John 3:3). As we wait for that joyous day, we are to demonstrate to the world the purity that God the Holy Spirit imparts in us. Because we are adopted by the President of the Universe, let us enjoy the privilege while exemplifying His character.
Prayer
Thank You, Jesus, for loving and adopting me, a worthless, sinful human being.
