And let our people also learn to maintain good works to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful.
Titus 3:14 (NKJV)
If you have a healthy fruit tree in your garden, you expect fruit from it during harvest time. If that doesn’t happen, there is no reason for the tree to exist. And so it is with a Christian life. We can seem holy and busy, but if we don’t produce fruit, we’re just existing. We are not living.
Before the Letter Closes
In the epistle to Titus, Paul discusses the qualifications of church leaders and the conduct of believers. As he concludes, though, he appears to say that theology always requires practical application. Truth always needs to be translated into a form of service. God’s presence and glory must be made manifest in actions.
The grace that saves us also calls us to obedience and active service. We must help those in need because we have been so mercifully saved.
After All the Theology
Churches could debate doctrine all day long, but when it comes down to it, practical involvement is what brings about real change in a community. In the end, fruitfulness is not necessarily about what one believes but about what one does.
Today, find someone, anyone, who might be forgotten, burdened, or in need of kindness, and ask God to use you to bring fruit where it is lacking. Be intentional not to waste your time as God’s representative in the world, and may your heart be overflowing with the grace you’ve been given.
Prayer
Almighty God, help me to use the grace that you give me for doing good works for others.
