Then Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the Ark of the Covenant and cross over before the people.” So they took up the ark of the Covenant and went before the people.
Joshua 3:6 (NKJV)
One of the best-kept secrets of spiritual and material prosperity is to allow God to lead you. The story of the Jordan crossing illustrates this truth. At the centre of the narrative is the Ark of the Covenant, the embodiment of God’s presence.
Let God go Before You
God had assigned Joshua the unenviable responsibility of leading the children of Jacob into the Promised Land. To affirm that indeed He had anointed Joshua, and to ensure the Israelites respected and obeyed Joshua, God performed yet another mighty miracle (Joshua 3:7).
Under the guidance of God, Joshua told the priests, “Take up the Ark of the Covenant and cross over before the people.” In response, the priests, “took up the Ark of the Covenant and went before the people.” (Joshua 3:6).
Why Follow God?
Why was it necessary for the ark to be at the forefront? One, because they did not know the way to the Promised Land. Here is the evidence: “…that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.” (Joshua 3:4)
Two, to teach the people that it was by God’s might that they would cross the Jordan and conquer the Canaanite tribes. Three, to ensure the people would never forget the importance of prioritizing God in everything they planned to do.
Let God Show You the Way
It is for the same reasons that we must allow God to lead us in every aspect of our lives. Unlike God, we cannot tell what will happen the next second. We must trust the Lord to lead us through the good times, and especially through the tough terrain.
Allowing God to show us the way means we are acknowledging His sovereignty and Lordship over our lives. It implies surrendering ourselves to Him, obeying Him without question, and following Him wherever He leads us.
Allow God to Lead You
When we let the Lord go before us in our work, businesses, studies, relationships and families, He reminds us to give Him the front seat. As we seek the kingdom of God first, He promises to give us everything else we need.
Will you allow God to lead you today? Which area(s) of your life do you still need to surrender to Him? Do you normally start and end the day with God? Before you undertake any project or activity, do you ask God for approval?
Prayer
Almighty God, today and always, I allow You to lead me because Your ways are perfect and beneficial to me.
