Allow the Potter to Reshape His Vessel

Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.

Jeremiah 18:6 (NIV)

When the Master-Teacher wanted to deliver a powerful message, He chose an unforgettable object lesson. Let us join Prophet Jeremiah in the divine classroom today.

In Jeremiah 18:1-6, God instructs His servant to go to the potter’s house, where the Almighty will deliver a message (1-2). Jeremiah finds the potter busy at work (3). The pot being made is deformed. The potter reshaped it into another vessel (4), as it seems “best to him.”

Now comes the lesson, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.” In verses 6 to 11, God reiterates His sovereignty over human beings and earthly kingdoms.

From this analogy, we learn that God owns us and has the right to do whatever He wants with us. Sometimes we think too highly of ourselves and forget who we really are – mere clay, at the mercy of the Potter.

However, when we submit ourselves into His loving arms, God forgives us. Why? “For He Himself knows our form; He is mindful that we are nothing but dust.” Psalm 103:14 (NASB). He refashions us into new vessels, giving us a second chance to walk in righteousness.

Is there an area in your life that needs to be remoulded? Allow the Potter to do His work of reforming you. Have you given up on yourself, feeling and believing God cannot accept you back? Take heart. He is ready to create you again, if you will submit to Him.

Father, I am the clay; You are the Potter. Reshape me as you see best. Amen.
