Let all things be done decently and in order.
1 Corinthians 14:40 (NKJV)
1 Corinthians 14:40 serves as a reminder that there is a heavenly law that needs to be followed in our Christian lives, especially in worship and among believers. The gatherings at the church in Corinth were chaotic, with individuals talking over each other and confusion rife during worship.
Let All Things Be Orderly
The apostle was urging the Corinthians to meet a higher standard that was based on respect and understanding. God wants peace and clarity in His house, but it is easy for our behaviors to become confused or disruptive while we are experiencing intense spiritual fervor.
This verse’s main lesson is that God is an orderly God. The beauty of God’s flawless design is evident since the dawn of creation. There is a systematic pattern to the planet, the stars, the oceans, and the heavens. God wants us to relate with one another during worship and in our daily lives in a manner that reflects this same order.
Appreciating Order and Decency in Worship
When Christians come together as a body, we should worship, serve, and act in a way that exalts God and uplifts the church. This does not mean that all services have to follow a rigid, static script; rather, it calls for us to undertake each task with purpose and reverence for God’s presence.
The same demand is made whether in Bible studies, church gatherings, or informal conversations with other believers: Let us do everything in a certain way that glorifies God and is polite and orderly.
