Are We Neglecting this Important Group of Needy People?

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, March 16, 2022
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household. of faith.
Galatians 6:10 (NKJV)

A bright young girl risked not joining university. She lived in abject poverty with her single mother and siblings. When the media highlighted her predicament, many well-wishers came forward and helped the girl and her family.

The generosity of these bighearted individuals augurs well with Paul’s exhortation to the Galatians, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:10).

Countless Opportunities to do Good

However, must we wait for the media to broadcast cases of very needy persons for us to help? It is ironical that we can assist people in far-off places while disregarding the needy in our midst. Does charity not begin at home?

Opportunities to do good abound. They are within our families, neighborhoods and society. Among us are people who need material and spiritual assistance. The hungry, sick, widowed, depressed and imprisoned are in our vicinity. We need not go far.

Those who are of the Household of Faith

Galatians 6:10 also raises the critical issue of assisting “those who are of the household of faith.” Again, it is ironical to see the church assisting non-members while neglecting very needy believers. Both situations deserve our attention.

Paul’s message to the Galatians applies to us today. The needy are amongst us. God has given us resources. He watches keenly to see whether we will reach out to disadvantaged, especially those we live and interact with every day.

Whom will you do good to today?

Prayer
Almighty Father, show me a person with whom I can share the blessings you have bestowed on me.

Proverbs 14:31
but kindness shown to the poor is an act of worship. It’s much honour before God when we tend to the spiritual and material needs of the needy. When Job prayed for His friends, God restored his blessings.
