Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
Hebrews 13:2 (NLT)
Over the years, I have observed that the more urbanized and ‘modern’ a society becomes, the less hospitable it is likely to be. People in rural areas tend to be more welcoming and kinder than their urban counterparts. Why is this? What is the Bible’s counsel on hospitality?
Many people and families aspire to be kind to other human beings. However, it is more convenient to be generous to someone you know than to a stranger. Perhaps this is because of familiarity with the circumstances the person you want to help is in.
Granted, helping a stranger may expose you to risks you never anticipated. For example, you may accommodate a stranger who may end up stealing from you or harming your family. Sometimes the stranger you help may turn out to be a fraudster.
Why, then, does the Bible remind us to be hospitable to strangers? Abraham welcomed visitors who turned out to be God’s angels. By doing this, he was able to intercede for and save his nephew, Lot, from being destroyed together with the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Like Abraham, we are directed to be kind to people we do not know. By being ingenious in the way we practice our benevolence, we can do God’s will. For example, we can give regular contributions to charitable organizations which will then assist needy people we do not know. The offerings we give in church can serve the same purpose.
You can offer to pay for a stranger to spend the night in a guest house if you feel vulnerable hosting them in your house. Instead of giving cash to a student, you can pay for their education directly to the school. Find a way to help a stranger, despite the challenges.
Your angel may not come dressed like one. Your angel may be a mother who has not fed her children for days. It may be a person who cannot afford hospital fees. Perhaps your angel is an orphan whom you can adopt. Find your angel today and be generous to him or her.
Prayer
Father, lead me to my human angel today and show me how to be kind to him or her.
Very encouraging, that we should extend our hands to those in needs.
God bless you for the good work
Amen.
