If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
Matthew 7:11 (NKJV)
After a tough day at work, I left the office to attend an important function in our church. That had been my routine for close to two weeks. Today, my exhaustion threatened to ground my body. After the church service, all I wanted was to go home and rest.
A Father’s Befitting Gift
As I walked out of the church gate, I remembered something important. My daughter’s birthday was coming up in a few days, and she had asked me to purchase several items for the celebrations. This meant I had to take a detour to the supermarket instead of going straight home.
For the love of my daughter, I defied my tiredness, visited the superstore, and bought what she had asked for. Not even physical and metal exhaustion could deprive me of the joy of bringing a smile to the little one’s face. I knew that a father’s gift meant everything to a child.
A Parent’s Devotion to Offspring
In my own small way, I endeavour to pamper my children, giving them all I can while applying godly wisdom. However, I cannot even come close to my Heavenly Father’s devotion to His offspring, an issue Jesus addresses while preaching to an eager crowd.
“Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?” (Matthew 7:9-10). Only a heartless, sadistic father would dare treat his son or daughter with such cruelty! Most fathers would turn the world upside down to secure the best presents for their children.
Are You Enjoying God’s Good Gifts?
Jesus concludes, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:11). God is more willing to give me the goodies of life than I was to organize a birthday party for my daughter.
Are you enjoying God’s good gifts? Unlike an earthly father, God knows exactly what you need and when to give it to you. Your work is to ask. God’s role is to give. His gifts bring no sorrow to us. Instead, they add to our joy. When was the last time you asked, sought, and knocked on God’s door?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, extend the good things of life to me.
