Jesus said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.”
John 21:6 (NKJV)
Even after the resurrected Jesus had appeared to the disciples, they seemed unsettled and disorganized. Peter wasted no time in returning to his default settings. “I am going fishing,” he told several other disciples (John 21:3).
The others followed him but “that night they caught nothing” (V. 3). They could not believe it. Where was all their skill and experience?
Like the disciples, sometimes we veer off from Christ and return to our former lives. It is then that God disappoints us because He has better plans for us. He will make us fail even in our areas of strength if our plans would divert us from divine purpose and destiny.
The climax of this beautiful story is when Christ appears and directs, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” (v. 6). The results? “So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.” (6).
That is what happens when we allow God to take control of our lives. Without Christ, our efforts will avail to nothing. However, when we cast our nets on the right side where Jesus directs, we achieve success beyond our imaginations.
What have you been trying to achieve but have not succeeded? God says, “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.’” (Isaiah 30:21, NKJV). Will you heed God’s voice and cast your net on the right side?
Lord Jesus, by my efforts I have failed. Show me the right side, where I should cast my net.
Jesus would have us follow Him and cast our nets where He directs. How does this devotional relate to your life experiences? Share with us your reflections through your comments. Be blessed.
