And be kind to one another…

Ephesians 4:32 (NKJV)

When I got my first job, I was happy but worried. Although I could now earn a living, I did not have money at hand to rent and furnish a house immediately.

Thankfully, a friend came to my rescue. My workplace was in his rural home. He suggested that I live with his family until I would afford to live on my own. His parents were glad to have me live with them. I was overjoyed.

Overwhelming Generosity

Their kindness was overwhelming. They offered me a comfortable room to live in and treated me with utmost love and gentleness. I soon settled down and began to play the role of a son. My friend’s family became a second family to me.

When the time came for me to move out and rent my own house, my ‘mother’ and ‘grandmother’ would hear none of it. It took much persuasion to convince them that I needed to start taking control over all aspects of my life.

Repaying Kindness

My adopted family’s benevolence reminds me of Apostle Paul’s exhortation to the Christians in Ephesus, “And be kind to one another…” (Ephesians 4:32). How can I repay these and other people who have shown kindness to me?

I can repay them in kind. That would be great. Still, will that compensate for all they did to me? Some of my many benefactors are dead by now. It is impossible to express my gratitude to them personally.

Compassion in the Fruit of the Spirit

I realize that the best way to repay people’s generosity is to be kind to other people within my reach. Is there a child I can help educate? Can I share food with a hungry individual or family? What help can I offer a jobless or sick person?

According to Apostle Paul, kindness is an important nutrient of the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). If we are truly converted, we will not strive to assist those in need. We will not consider it a burden but a privilege to share our blessings with the less fortunate.

Be Kind to One Another

Look around your family, church and community. Do you see people who need your compassion? What can you share with such individuals? How best can you heed the exhortation to be kind to one another?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, show how to demonstrate kindness to people in need.

The ripples of a little care.. to change the world, one needs to do just a little thing for someone that will create a ripple in the person’s life, a ripple that will spread through the person’s life and the world at large. It’s the little care that we show to others that matter.
