Be still, and know that I am God…
Psalms 46:10 (NKJV)
Phone conversations in a noisy environment can be frustrating and embarrassing. You have to speak at the top of your voice but still not pass or receive the message.
On the other hand, you can be in a quiet environment and still fail to send or receive messages effectively because of internal noise. This includes stress and contradictory streams of thought.
In essence, for effective communication, both the internal and external environments must be conducive. Where there is calmness, communication takes place with minimal interferences.
Communing with God Effectively
The same is true in the spiritual realm. For example, Jesus used to withdraw from the crowds and His disciples, and pray either late in the night or early in the morning. He made sure there was no external noise when communing with God.
Similarly, when we fast in order to pray, we are regulating the internal environment for effectual interaction with God. Fasting clears the body and the mind of distractions and allows us to listen keenly to God.
Be Still and Know That I am God
That is the principle we find in Psalms 46:10, where God declares, “Be still, and know that I am God…” God manifests His essence and power more effectively when we are calm and in the right mindset.
Some of the distractions that constitute noise in our lives include the cares of this life, worry, stress and lifestyle choices such as drug and alcohol addiction.
It is only when we surrender to God and hush other voices that we can hear Him speaking clearly. The more the soul quietens the louder the voice of God becomes.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I am still. Speak and reveal Yourself to me.
Lord Jesus come and speak to me am still.
Amen, George
Amen! May we let go the cares and noisy distractions of this life and have a chance to keep still and listen to the voice of God.
Exactly, Doc.
