Bear Your Fruit in Your Season

Daily Devotional – Friday, December 23, 2022
He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season;
whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

Psalms 1:3 (NKJV)

David compares a righteous person to a fruit-bearing tree. The psalmist emphasizes that if we are connected with God, we cannot be barren. Our lives will attest to our relationship with God.

Brings Forth Its Fruit

A closer examination of this psalm also reveals an interesting detail. Here is verses 3: “He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season; whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”

There is a tendency to concentrate on the forest and forget the individual trees. David deviates from this practice. He describes the righteous person as a singular tree, reveling in the nourishment of rare desert water.

Being Fruitful

No tree bears fruit for the other tree. Trees do not compete among themselves to produce fruit. Each of them produces according to the resources it receives from the environment. As David intimates, each tree brings forth its fruit.

Similarly, Jesus calls individuals to follow Him and bear fruit. According to the talents and abilities He has given us, Christ expects us to be productive. He does not judge us according to the achievements of others.

Fruits in Season

Moreover, our work is not to compete with other fruit-bearers. We are unique beings with distinctive personalities. God wants us to use our varying talents to live productively and to complement one another in furthering Gospel work.

Notice also that each tree bears its fruit in its season. We all have our individual seasons during which we realize our dreams and plans. If others are thriving and you are struggling, that is their season. Yours will come. Be patient.

Bear Your Fruit in Your Season

Are you living commensurate to the resources God gives you? Do not envy other people’s progress. God has a reason for who and where you are today. In due season, He will bring you to your expected end. For now, continue bearing fruit.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me continue bearing fruit according to my abilities and in my season.

John 15 addresses a tree that bears good fruits. If we abide in Christ it’s definite we will bear good fruits.
