Beware of the Mixed Multitude!

Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV)

When the Israelites left Egypt, “Many other people went up with them” (Exodus 12:38). This mixed multitude was composed of native Egyptians and slaves from other nations.

Some of these individuals were fleeing Egypt after God’s plagues had destroyed the land. Others were escaping slavery. There were also those who genuinely opted to join the family of God, having witnessed His mighty works in Egypt.

Among the people Moses was leading, therefore, there was a mix of religious practices and cultures. The Ten Commandments were God’s tool of introducing and teaching a new culture of righteous living.

However, change of attitude and character would not take place overnight. The ungodly influence of the mixed multitude was evident in the practice of idolatry in the form of the golden calf (Exodus 32).

In Numbers 11, the mixed multitude instigated a riot by demanding for the delicacies they used to enjoy in Egypt. This caused dissatisfaction and murmuring among God’s children. The rebels even wanted to appoint another leader to take them back to Egypt.

The mixed multitude symbolizes the attitudes, habits, behaviours and friends from our sinful past. Many Christians do not experience the full package of salvation because they carry burdens from the past.

Paul warns, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.”’ (1 Corinthians 15:33). As long as we keep the company of ungodly people and feed our minds with unrighteous content, our walk with God will be compromised.

Is there a ‘mixed multitude’ that is hindering your experience of salvation?

Father, I want to fellowship with You and with believers who are genuinely committed to You.
