Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.
Proverbs 27:2 (NKJV)
We live in a world that tells us to “put ourselves out there,” to talk about our accomplishments, and to make sure everyone knows what we are capable of. Social media, for example, is full of people highlighting their achievements, their talents, and their wins. Today’s key text, however, reminds us not to blow our trumpets.
Showing Off
Constantly talking about ourselves can make us haughty. Pride quietly shifts our focus away from God, who actually gave us the abilities and opportunities in the first place, and puts the spotlight on us. When we feel the need to constantly prove ourselves or seek approval from others, we are forgetting that God fully knows and deeply loves us.
Jesus, the Son of God, did not always talk about Himself. He served others, healed the broken, and humbled Himself, even to the point of dying on a cross. He let His life speak for itself. That’s what God has called us to do. Serve quietly. Love genuinely. If people notice, that’s fine. If they don’t, God sees it all, and His approval is more than enough.
Blowing Your Own Trumpet
Do you feel the urge to blow your own trumpet sometimes? What would it look like to just let your actions speak for themselves and trust God with the rest? How can you practice quiet humility this week?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I don’t want to live for the spotlight. Help me to be content in Your love and to walk humbly, trusting that You see and know everything I do. Keep my heart free from pride, and let my life point others to You, not to me.
