Celebrating Good and Perfect Gifts

Daily Devotional – Friday, April 2, 2021

Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father…

James 1:17 (NLT)

We all appreciate gifts. A gift is an expression of love from the giver to the receiver. According to James, “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father.”

Think about the perfect gift of the sun, for example. Without it, there would be no life on earth. Since the time God put it in motion, the sun has never stopped functioning.

How about plants? None exists for its own good. Grass and shrubs are food for animals and humans. Trees make our lives comfortable, for example, through rainfall and furniture.

You are alive and healthy. Your mind is countless times more sophisticated and efficient than a computer. The processes in your body still puzzle the greatest medical researchers. Isn’t that another perfect gift?

Do you belong to a family? It is not perfect, but it is a good place to be. It is a gift that offers much-needed support, love, kindness, and a sense of belonging.

Are you in love? Do you have friends? Is your society cohesive and just? Is your church ‘the place to be’? Are you happy with your life? Are these not good gifts from God?

These and other divine gifts should prompt you to ask, “How can I repay the LORD for all His goodness to me? (Psalm 116:12).

The answer? “I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.  I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people” (Psalm 116:13–14).

Father, thank you for your good and perfect gifts. Remind me to always be grateful.

A good reminder though a negative human being will dwell in complaint rather than Thanksgiving.
Wonderful to remind us this.
