Christ Has Set Us Free

Daily Devotional – Saturday, March 2, 2024
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.
Galatians 5:1 (NIV)

Social media keeps throwing nuggets of wisdom my way. A vendor is selling birds. The little, poor creatures are trapped inside a big cage. Instead of flying happily in mid-air and enjoying their freedom, the winged creatures flap helplessly inside the trap.

Rescued to be Set Free

I pity the birds and wonder how callous the vendor must be. How can he make a living by harassing and inconveniencing innocent creatures? Is there no other decent job available in his community?

Then something interesting happens. A driver stops to buy the birds. The vendor starts picking the birds one by one and handing them over to the buyer. On his part, the buyer releases every bird he receives. He has bought the birds to set them free.

Christ has Liberated Us

According to the apostle Paul, a similar event took place about two thousand years ago. Paul states, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” (Galatians 5:1). Like the heartless vendor, Satan had enslaved us. He denied us the joy of life God had granted us in Eden.

The devil used us as he willed. He made us objects of his selfishness and cruelty. We wallowed in sin and lacked the ability to free ourselves. Eventually, we became complacent and thought our fate was sealed.

Christ has Set Us Free

Well, until the day Jesus came along and paid the price for our freedom. Unlike the kind driver, though, Jesus did not use earthly courage to secure our freedom. He shed His own precious and innocent blood.

Incidentally, Jesus bought us—not to enslave us but to set us free. No longer should we be slaves to the evil one and his trickery. Paul asserts, “Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1). Christ has set us free to enjoy freedom from sin and condemnation.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, I cannot thank You enough for freeing me from the bondage of sin to the liberty of serving you without the weight of guilt.
