But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
Matthew 14:30 (NKJV)
Thomas is the disciple that we associate with doubt in the Bible. A closer examination of Peter, though, reveals he was as much a doubter as Thomas.
On the night Jesus appeared to His petrified disciples on a stormy sea, He assured them, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27). Peter responded, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” (Verse 28).
Why Did You Doubt?
Shortly after, at the invitation of Jesus, Peter starts walking on water towards the Lord. “But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”” (Verse 30).
Why did Peter begin to sink? When Jesus stretched His hand and caught the drowning man, He said, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Verse 31). Once again, Peter had doubted Jesus.
We are often not different from Peter. When trouble assails us, we lose sight of Jesus and focus on the scary waves around us. Our fear makes us doubt whether Jesus is willing to save us from our problems.
Christ’s Antidote For Fear and Doubt
Peter knew Jesus personally and had seen Him perform might miracles, yet he doubted. As long as we glorify our negative circumstances instead of God’s power, we can become doubters.
The remedy for fear and doubt is to fix our thoughts on our loving and caring God who will never leave us or forsake us.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I fix my mind on You. Take my fear and doubt and give me unwavering faith in You.
Amen…we should turn our eyes to Jesus. When walking in the world with fearful insults from all directions, Christ help us have an unwavering faith in Him.
Amen, Dr. We must fix our eyes on Jesus and ignore everything else.
