Come Aside and Rest

Daily Devotional – Saturday, February 11, 2023
Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.
Mark 6:31 (NKJV)

After a long hiatus from night travel, I had two trips recently, during which I noticed something interesting. More and more people are working overnight. This does not mean they rest during the day. Rather, people are sleeping less and working more. There is barely rest for the weary in society today.

God Rested

A friend told me he does not need an alarm clock to wake him up. His problems keep him awake at night and startle him before he can get a decent nap. As a result, his health is failing and his interactions with his wife and children are diminishing every day. He has forgotten how rest feels.

What does the Bible teach about rest? To find the answers, let us go back to the creation account:
Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” (Genesis 2:1-3).

A Special Day for Rest

The Almighty God created the earth and everything in it for six days and then rested on the seventh. He celebrated the His work of creation by taking one day off. To affirm the importance of resting, God commanded the Israelites:
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy…For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore, the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” (Exodus 20:8 & 11).

Cease from Your Labours

When God the Son clothed Himself in human flesh and came to earth as Jesus Christ, He rested on the Seventh Day (Luke 4:16). Paul and the other disciples followed suit (Acts 17:2) because they knew “The Sabbath was made for man…” (Mark 2:27) to rest and rejuvenate physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Your Creator knows you need rest after your faithful labours. A full day of relaxation rejuvenates your mind, body and spirit. It also gives you the energy you need to face a new week. The Almighty God created time for rest and invites you to join him in taking a break from your toils. This special day is His gift to you.

Come Aside and Rest

Jesus invites you like He did his disciples, “Come aside by yourself to a deserted place and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31). You can never overcome all you financial and existential problems by working day and night, seven days a week. Come aside and rest with your family while praising and thanking God for His goodness and mercy.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for understanding my physical and spiritual labours and giving me a special gift of a day of rest.
