“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the LORD, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”
Isaiah 1:18 (NKJV)
Little mischievous Peter had climbed the huge, tall tree once again. His angry mother stood at the foot of the tree, cane in hand. A small crowd of family, friends, and passersby gathered to witness the showdown between mother and son.
Come Now, Let’s Settle This
“Peter, come down quickly!” Mother thundered.
“I won’t. I know you want to cane me.” Retorted the scared boy.
“How many times have I warned you not to climb this tree? Even your latest scars have yet to heal. You are hurting yourself, not me. Come down now!
“Throw away the cane first, mother.”
“Okay. I have done it. Now, climb down and let us discuss this issue. I promise to listen to you and to give you a second chance.”
Come Now, and Let Us Debate Your Case
Peter started descending slowly. Mother watched keenly, groaning every time that the son appeared to slip. Finally, the wayward boy reached the bottom and fell into the embrace of the mother. That day, the two had a deep conversation during which the mother forgave her son.
In Isaiah Chapter 1, God is like Peter’s mother, having a conversation with a wayward child. God’s children have rebelled against Him, not once, but on countless occasions. In fact, instead of Israel running after God in repentance, the loving Father chases after His prodigal children.
Now, Let’s Settle the Matter
The Lord pleads, “Come now, and let us reason together. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” (Isaiah 1:18). The red colour in crimson and blood represents the enormity of man’s transgression, while snow and wool symbolize the extent to which God forgives and restores human beings.
Like Peter’s mother, God invites us into a conversation with Him, not for the purposes of justifying or excusing our sins. As we reason with God, we realize how far we have wandered from Him and how high His grace can elevate the repentant soul. Because of God’s unconditional love, we receive forgiveness, restoration, and renewal of body, mind, and spirit.
Come Now, and Let Us Reason Together
Today, God repeats the appeal, “Come now, and let us reason together.” He invites you to discuss with Him your life’s issues to establish where you have gone astray. God wants to give you a new lease on life if you acknowledge your sinfulness and ask for His forgiveness. Will you heed the Lord’s kind appeal and come to the table of reasoning?
Prayer
Dear God, I am tired of running away from You. I need Your forgiveness and restoration. I am now ready to reason together with You.
