When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!
Luke 15:17 (NIV)
According to Dictionary.com, to come to one’s senses means to “return to thinking or behaving sensibly and reasonably; recover consciousness.” On its part, Collinsdictionary.com says, “If you say that someone has come to their senses or has been brought to their senses, you mean that they have stopped being foolish and are being sensible again.”
Become Sensible Again
Now, turn to the story of the prodigal son. After the young man had squandered his inheritance in pleasure and was now living in pleasure, the Bible makes this interesting comment about him: “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!’” (Luke 15:17).
In other words, this young man realized he was acting foolishly and decided to use his rational faculties again. From the day he left home to the present, this lad was insane, so to speak. His indulgence in sin had deadened his senses. He had lost the revitalizing power the Holy Spirit has for the righteous.
Come to Your Senses
That is what happens when we leave the presence of God and wallow in the mire of sin. We are not better people in mental hospitals. Sin interferes with our thinking by making us deny the existence of God in our words and actions. It convinces us that God is not watching and that He will not act against our evil actions.
Thankfully, when we come to our senses like the prodigal son and return home to our loving Father, He accepts us as we are, forgives us, and restores us. Therefore, if you are living in sin and the weight of evil threatens to crush you, come to your senses and run back home. God will renew your mind and give you a new lease of life.
Prayer
Dear Father, whenever I get out of my senses by rebelling against You, draw me back to You.
