Contemplating God’s Unfathomable Goodness

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life…
Psalms 23:6 (NKJV)

What can we do to deserve God’s unfathomable goodness? How often has the Lord’s hand protected us from harm, irrespective of whether we are aware of this act of grace? If only God could open our inner eyes, we would be more grateful to Him than we are today.

Goodness and Mercy Shall Follow Me

Prophet Elisha was in Gilgal, visiting the sons of the prophets at a time when there was a biting famine. When the prophet asked his students to prepare a meal, one of them went out, gathered wild gourds, boiled them, and served the stew to the rest.

This is an innocent action that is meant to meet a basic need. However, once the sons of the prophets taste the stew, they spew it out immediately. They wail, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” (2 Kings 4:40). Elisha then asks for some flour, pours it in the pot of deadly stew, and the meal is now safe to eat.

Contemplating God’s Unfathomable Goodness

Like these men of God, we often engage, knowingly or unknowingly, in activities that, though innocent, may harm us. For instance, the food we consume occasionally contains deadly toxins. Moreover, without our knowledge, our enemies often set traps for us, but the goodness of the Lord shields us from harm.

Take a moment today to thank God for His protective and unfathomable goodness and mercy, which shield you from harm even when you have brought trouble upon yourself. Join David in affirming: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life…” (Psalms 23:6). Rest assured that God is watching over you around the clock.
