Do not be afraid; only believe.
Mark 5:36 (NKJV)
When Jairus’ twelve year-old daughter becomes sick, this desperate father approaches Jesus, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live.” (Mark 5:23).
You can almost feel the anguish in this man’s heart. At the same time, it is clear that He has faith in Jesus. The Lord leaves the crowd that has gathered around Him and follows Jairus.
Why Trouble the Teacher any Further?
Before Jesus and Jairus can reach the latter’s home, however, they spend some time addressing the issue of a woman that touches Jesus’ garment is healed instantly. Meanwhile, Jairus receives the disheartening report, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” (Mark 5:35).
Will Jairus blame Jesus, the crowd or the woman who was healed? Before Jairus can leave, though, Jesus tells him, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” (Mark 5:36). Fear is the enemy of faith. Fear takes advantage of negative circumstances around us to persuade us that Jesus does not care about us.
Do Not Be Afraid; Only Believe
Jesus eventually resurrects the daughter of Jairus. He proves that those who have faith in Him can expect miracles. Jesus demonstrates that He is not bound by time and other factors that limit human beings.
Today, if circumstances around you predict gloom and failure, do not be afraid; only believe. If your financial situation, doctor’s report and living conditions fill you with fear, remember Jesus can give life to dry bones. He will make a way where there is none today.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I choose to believe in You in spite of my negative circumstances.
