And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
Galatians 6:9 (NKJV)
For yet another weekend, the pastor asked for offerings to support some unforeseen but urgent causes. It was now becoming a norm to have impromptu collections in church. “This is getting out of hand.” I complained in my heart.
Generosity Fatigue
As if he was reading my mind, the pastor said, “I know we have asked you to assist in various causes many times this month. Do not be weary of giving. However, if you think you are tired of receiving blessings from God, please do not give.”
His words startled me. I Knew God was speaking to me. I was experiencing what I call ‘generosity fatigue’. It is a situation where one gives so many times that they feel exhausted. However, that was not a justification for complaining.
Not Exhausted in Doing Good
Interestingly, Paul alludes to a similar experience among the Christians in Galatia when he writes, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9).
In the early church, many believers were forced out of their homes and businesses. The fled to Jerusalem where they depended on the generosity of fellow believers. Do you remember believers selling their property and bring the money to the apostles to support widows?
Constant Calls to Give to the Needy
Similarly, in First Corinthians 16, Paul instructed believers to set aside some money to assist the poor brethren in Jerusalem. Considering there were many other needy people in local congregations, there must have been many calls to give.
It was logical, therefore, for Paul to urge the Galatians not to get tired of giving. The apostle compared kindness to a farmer who plants and looks forward to the harvesting season when he will reap bountifully.
Do Not Grow Weary of Doing Good
During this festive season, there are many calls to give. The poor, orphans, the elderly, widows and widowers, the sick and prisoners need your attention. As the demands keep increasing, do not be weary of giving because God is not tired of blessing you.
In addition, reflect on these verses:
- He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD and He will pay back what he has given. (Proverbs 19:17).
- Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:9).
Prayer
Lord Jesus, because You never get tired of blessing me, help me not to be weary of doing good.

Thank you, Brian. Then interesting thing is that we are also needy in some respect or having been needy before and someone else’s generosity made the difference for us.
