And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
In a world where people are ungrateful and unappreciative, scripture urges us to “not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9). The story of Mordechai is a perfect illustration of this maxim.
Let’s Not Become Discouraged in Doing Good
Haman, a powerful and influential man in King Ahasuerus’ government (Haman) is angry with Mordechai because the Jewish man refuses to stand or tremble when Haman is passing.
After consulting his wife and friends, Haman decides that Mordechai must die Haman prepares gallows where Mordechai is to hanged. As Haman prepares to incite the king to order for Mordechai’s death, something interesting happens. It has to do with Mordechai’s past.
Let Us Not Get Tired of Doing Good
King Ahasuerus is suffering from a serious bout of insomnia. Unable to find sleep, the king orders a servant to read the history books of his kingdom for him. Books appear to have a close alliance with sleep!
Now comes the bombshell! “And it was found written how Mordecai had told about Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, and who had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.” (Esther 6:2).
And in Doing Good, Let Us Not Fail
What a heroic act from a non-native! King Ahasuerus asks, “What honor or distinction has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?” “Nothing has been done for him.” The servants answer. (Verse 3).
To Haman’s shock and disgrace, the King orders him to conduct an elaborate ceremony to honour Mordechai. What follows is that Haman is hanged in the gallows he had constructed and the Jews are spared from genocide.
We Must Not Get Tired of Doing Good
Now think about Haman’s selfless act of saving the king’s life from the two evil servants prior to the current events. As a foreigner in exile, he could have considered the impending death of the king as none of his business and failed to report the two eunuchs.
He could have asked himself what he would gain by reporting the plot but he decided to do good without expecting a reward. Little did he know that that unselfish act would save him and his people from death in future.
Continue to Help Others
In Galatians 6:9, Paul reminds us not to grow weary of doing good because one day we shall reap if we do not give up. Mordechai’s day finally came – exactly when he needed God to intervene. God brought Mordechai’s good deeds of the past to King Ahasuerus notice.
Are you engaged in charitable work that appears to have no rewards? Do you find yourself helping need people, including total strangers? Do you sometimes deny yourself a comfortable life to put a smile on the faces of less fortunate people?
Do Not Grow Weary of Doing Good
Do not grow weary of doing good because God records all your acts. In due course, He will remind people he has placed in positions of power and influence about your good deeds. One day, you will look back and be glad you did good to others.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I will not grow weary of doing good for my reward is with You and You will give it to me at the right time.
